Book of radiance, girl with teacup on fire

Radiance

Book 1 of The HellFire Series

Everyone in my life has lied to me in a twisted effort to keep me safe and happy and all it got me was a death sentence...

Stay in the civilized cities and the monsters won't get you. Don't make deals with the fey for glory or coin because you'll die before you ever touch it. Beware the forests because vampyres stalk the darkness. Avoid the sunflower fields because they trap an ancient evil that the bloodthirsty fey caused.

No one warned me that the monsters looked like handsome suitors at parties, or that a single touch from one would be my undoing. I was never warned to fear those who claimed to be human.

I've read enough of my father's service reports to know what happens to those unfortunate enough to be targeted by the fey and both end in death. Either the fey consumes their mind and body or the military executes them for consorting with the enemy and losing their humanity.

But I refuse to become another statistic. I will beg, bargain, and bleed to make sure I don't.

Monsters are everywhere; especially in cities. Loosely worded deals are dangerous, but sometimes they're the only option you have. Vampires don't lurk in the forests because something more terrifying has already laid claim to the trees. Always avoid sunflower fields because the pictograms on the weathered yellow signs were warning us of something and it wasn't the fey.

Sneak Peak at Radiance

Tove studied me a moment before deciding it would be more fun to tell me than to keep it a secret. “It marks you as mine. You will belong to me until the day you die and as such, I hold the power to feed on you and whatever else I like.” A dangerous emotion flashed across his face as his eyes traveled my body.  I could practically feel his lust reaching for me with clawed fingers.

“Fey love deals.” I sputtered as dark ends filled the corridors of my mind. “What sort of deal can we make? I want it removed. What is your price?”

“Bargaining isn’t going to work.” He drawled, “What a fey Marks cannot be taken back. You’re mine and nothing will change that. It’s delightful that you thought to try. Most of them just cry and beg me to release them. It’s amusing that you think yourself clever.”

“I will find a way.” I declared icily, staring intently into the danger because I was too proud to look away.

“You can try but be careful little rose.” He advised, “The military doesn’t grant leniency to nobles, even the daughters of generals. One peak at that Mark and you’ll be dragged away in chains faster than you can blink. Be careful of what rocks you look under. I can guard you against all the fey of the world if need be but even I cannot slay a legion of men.” He grinned.

Was he truly that powerful? How would I escape the Mark of such a powerful fey?

“What are you going to do with me?” I forced myself to ask.

“I’m not here to spirit you away into the NeverNever if that is your fear. I’m leaving you be for now. I haven’t tasted a soul as rich as yours in decades.” He cooed, cutting into my silent plotting “I’m so very glad I didn’t kill you outright. A soul such as yours is very rare you know.”
